According to the SLPA it will open the North gate in a couple of days in order to help improve vessel turnaround time by 6-7 hours and enable the port to accommodate more vessels. In 2008 the Port handled a record 3.687m teu.
The North gate has been closed for 10 years due to security threats from the Tamil Tigers rebels, who were wiped out in May. Since the end of the war Sri Lanka has been vying for hub status in the Asian maritime industry supported by its strategic location on the world map between the east and the west.
