Describing the new ‘Protolon iQ’ system as a ‘significant milestone in the cable industry’ and as important as the integration of optical fibres in power supply reeling cables 25 years ago, Arnd Carl, head of R&D at Prysmian, said, “We did many product developments during the past, but this one is breathtaking and the coolest I’ve ever seen”.
As the container handling industry has developed in recent years, there has been greater demand for longer cable lengths, with cables required to handle higher voltage power supplies, along with an increase in data flow and quality, all within a 24/7 operational timeframe.
Targeting the reeling umbilical cord for machinery such as reach stackers or container cranes, the new cable contains sensors to measure and control mechanical impacts.
