A programme of civil works to extend the wider gauge crane rail to the end of berth 204 has already started and is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of next year. This will enable the cranes to operate along 1075 m of the terminal’s 1350 m deep-sea quayline.
As part of this upgrading process, the company will also decommission the three Morris-built cranes that were suspended from operation and which have been parked up on berth 204 following the boom collapse accident whilst loading the containership ‘NYK Themis’ in July this year.
Commenting on the investment programme, Campbell Mason, DP World Southampton managing director, said, “In parallel with the industry trend toward ever larger vessels, we must continue to invest in the equipment required to meet our customers’ growing needs”.
