PSA Singapore Terminals, which currently operates hundreds of Kalmar terminal tractors, initiated a project for a hybrid terminal tractor with ST Kinetics some two years ago and the first model was publicly launched on November 16, 2009.
“We are thrilled that the project to incorporate ST Kinetics’ hyPOWER Hybrid Hydraulic Drive into Cargotec’s Kalmar terminal tractors for trial with PSA Singapore Terminals was a success and demonstrated fuel savings that benefit both the operator and the environment,” said Sew Chee Jhuen, ST Kinetics’ president.
“The first Kalmar terminal tractor with a hybrid capability was delivered to Singapore for field testing in October 2009 and has performed well. The hybrid package recovers braking energy and releases it during acceleration, thus reducing fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 15%,” said Mikko Vuojolainen, Vice President, Terminal Tractors, and Cargotec.
“Container terminals are often surrounded by urban development. Therefore, having high concentrations of big diesel engines offers great potential for meaningful reductions in emissions. PSA has always been a front-runner in demanding the latest low-emission engine technology in their terminal tractors and it comes as no surprise that we are testing this new hybrid technology in Singapore,” added Vuojolainen.
