“After only two years since the initial concept and order, it is a great achievement that these locomotives will be incorporated into our existing fleet so effectively,” said Paul Smart, Freightliner Heavy Haul’s managing director. “The first batch of PowerHaul locomotives arrived in the UK on November 8, 2008 to be followed by a further four – expected to arrive at Newport Docks this week,” he added.
The locomotives introduce state of the art technology to the UK rail freight market, with increased tractive effort, haulage and acceleration capabilities whilst lowering carbon emissions.
PowerHaul locomotive number 70001 is also due to start operational trials later this week for Freightliner’s intermodal business, hauling containers from the Port of Felixstowe to Birmingham.
