On the containers side, traffic to the Mediterranean grew 5.5%, however, overall volumes recorded a 15.4% decrease to just over 11.3m tonnes, with the number of full and empty teus decreasing by 15.3% to 1.25m teus.
“The diversification of our markets puts the Port of Montreal in a strong position to benefit from the economic recovery. Moreover, recent growth in certain types of dry bulk cargo traffic, such as iron ore, could be a harbinger of economic recovery,” stated Montreal Port Authority president and CEO, Ms. Sylvie Vachon.
In other cargoes, throughput at the grain terminal totalled 2.4m tonnes, an increase of 4.4%, although at 13m tonnes the volume of bulk cargoes experienced an 8.7% decline. Petroleum products remained essentially the same with an increase of 0.4%.
