The deepening will offer greater accessibility to the Port of Antwerp, permitting
wider tidal windows and, once completed, allowing container ships with draughts up 15 metres to be accommodated.
The navigation channel will be widened and deepened so as to increase the tide-independent navigation from the present draught of 11.90 m to 13.10 m, providing a keel clearance of 12.5%, allowing a margin for the squat effect plus a safety margin.
