“No infrastructure project in the State of Florida is more important than this one as it not only has regional and state-wide significance but also has been called a ‘nationally significant’ project by the Army Corp of Engineers,” said Port of Miami director, Bill Johnson.
Scheduled to be completed in 2014, the dredge would deepen Miami Harbour to 15 metres, enabling the port to accommodate the world’s largest cargo container vessels and double its cargo capacity over the next decade. Its completion would coincide with the opening of the new port tunnel, linking the interstate system and the port.
Mayor Alvarez called upon a group of local community leaders to lead the effort in securing federal funding.
