Developed over the past year at a cost of €30m (US$38m), the new 27,000 sq metre facility is the largest of its type in Europe and has the ability to assemble a wide range of equipment. This will include Hiab cranes, Bromma spreaders and Kalmar medium range terminal tractors.
Speaking after the opening ceremony, Mikael Makinen, President and CEO of Cargotec, admitted that 2009 was “extremely difficult”, although he stressed that whilst the company’s business in the USA shrank, Asia was and remains a growing sector of its market. He added that Asia was an area in which the company would like a stronger foothold.
A number of alternative sites were considered, from Turkey and throughout Europe, before the company decided that the new facility should be located in Poland.
