The €10m (US$13.4m) expansion was confirmed when the Waalhaven Group, the terminal owners, signed a rental agreement with the Municipality of Sittard-Geleen for the use of new port facilities in the port area near Born in the Netherlands.
Expansion work will include a 150-metre long quay and an additional four hectares of commercial land. In addition, the facility’s depth will be increased to 3.3 metres. The project will be funded partly by the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, the Province of Limburg and the Municipality of Sittard-Geleen.
The terminal currently has a capacity of 125,000 tue, with volumes expected to at least double over the coming years. The terminal serves Limburg and parts of Belgium and Germany.
