Occupying 1.4m sq ft (130 ha) with a storage capacity of 7500+teu, Oranjestad is used primarily for domestic import and transhipment cargoes.
The Port of Barcadera is located three miles south east of Oranjestad and mainly handles aggregates, gas, liquid bulk, ro-ro and break-bulk cargo.
Following a US$6m upgrade of Barcadera’s facilities, all non-containerised cargo was transferred there from Oranjestad. The next step is to transfer all Oranjestad’s containerised cargo Barcadera and to accomplish this, APA has finalised plans to invest around US$35m in the facility including the acquisition of a second mobile harbour crane. A Liebherr LHM 400 has been ordered and is currently scheduled to be shipped from Liebherr’s Rostock facility on December 13, 2010 and it will be Aruba’s first Liebherr mobile harbour crane.
