Founded in 1976 the primary role of Gulftainer is to manage and operate the container terminals of Sharjah, Port Khalid and Khorfakkan of behalf of the Sharjah Port Authority. In addition, Gulftainer manages the port activities in the Comoros Islands, Ruwais Port (Abu Dhabi) and, since August 2010, Berth 8 in South Port Umm Qasr, Iraq.

A spokesman for Gulftainer stated that; “Whilst we are assessing various options in the Americas region as nothing has yet been confirmed, we have no comment to make at this time.”
