Reports indicate that all Japanese ports have been closed and cargo handling suspended to assess damage following the 8.9 magnitude earthquake in the northeast of the country that triggered a series of massive tsunamis.
Details of damage at the country’s ports are scarce but it is understood that some in the north of Japan nearest to the epicentre have suffered severe damage.
Television footage has shown at least one large Panamax vessel grounded in northern Japan due to the tsunami.
