To be built in two phases, each estimated to cost R50bn (US$7.3bn), the construction of the first phase could start in 2015 with the facility becoming operational in 2019 when capacity at the current Durban port is expected to reach capacity. Once both phases are complete the overall port capacity is expected to be around 6m teu, twice that of Durban’s present facility.
The site of the old Durban international airport has being earmarked for the port and Transnet is in negotiations with the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa), the land owners, along with owners of surrounding land.
Brian Molefe, Transnet Group chief executive has said that it would not be possible for the full investment to come from the South African government or the parastatal.
