Requiring less energy and emitting less exhaust pollutants than diesel powered machines, the Company says that new eRTGs meet all the Port’s environmental requirements in terms of reduced greenhouse gas emissions, fuel economy and noise reduction among other advantages.
SMITCO is a joint venture between SSA International and Sociedad Portuaria de Santa Marta that manages, operates and markets the container terminal in which US$20m has already been invested in new equipment in addition to the US$25m in civil works.
Current terminal capacity annual capacity is 100,000 teu and the intention is to increase this to 300,000 teu by Q3, 2011. As and when phase 2 is completed, the terminal’s annual capacity will then be increased to 420,000 containers.
