Originally calling at the Port of Imbituba in South Brazil, João Batista Momesso, Mercosul´s trade manager, explained that the move to Itajai was due to its geographical position and the concentration of service providers in the region. “This will enable the line to offer door-to-door logistics solutions all over Brazil,” he added.
Expected to handle an average of 2,500 containers per month, mainly consisting of cargoes produced in Santa Catarina State such as frozen chicken, tiles, paper and cellulose, the rotation of the service now becomes Itajai, Manaus, Paranagua, Santos, Suape and Pecem.
Another new cabotage operator, Maestra Navegação e Logistica, made its inaugural call at the port in April, with the line intending to serve the ports of Itajai, Santos, Suape and Manaus.
