Integral to the switch from diesel-electric to battery-powered AGVs has been the commissioning of a fully-automated battery-changing station at the terminal, which ensures a seamless power supply to the battery-driven machines. The aim is eventually to replace the entire AGV fleet with battery-powered vehicles.
The BAGV manufacturer Gottwald Port Technology has been cooperating with HHLA on this technological development for several years, with an aim to eradicate exhaust gas in the terminal.
Extensive tests using a conventional AGV converted to battery operation have been successfully carried out at the terminal, providing long-term technical feedback on the new technology, battery behaviour and service life, as well as vehicle control. As a result two prototype operational vehicles have now joined the CTA fleet of AGVs.
