The latest earthquakes have impacted the port’s repair programme that was already under way, with the full extent of the damage from these latest quakes still being accessed by the port’s engineering and civil maintenance staff, supported by consultants.
An initial engineering assessment of the container terminal shows that the wharves have been further damaged, with new cracks appearing in areas repaved since the February earthquake.
Although container delivery and collection continues, it is not envisaged that stevedoring operations of vessels will return to normal until this Friday afternoon. As a result, berthing windows have been suspended until further notice.
