Following the cancellation of the proposed privatisation of the port, TCDD decided that it was necessary to upgrade and modernise the port in order to compete with the other Turkish ports which had installed modern handling equipment, leaving Izmir lagging well behind.
As a result, TCDD has appointed Portunus to undertake a refurbishment and upgrade programme of its STS cranes that were originally purchased in the 1980’s from local manufacturer MSM, Kocks and Reggiane.
TCDD says it has recognised that Turkey’s growing terminals depend on reliable and efficient equipment to yield high levels of productivity and efficiency, with low maintenance and operating costs and high mechanical reliability.
