The MSA has said that IRS (CHINA), as it will be known, will be able to carry out surveys and issue classification and statutory certificates to all types of vessels on People’s Republic of China territory and its national waters.
The International Register of Shipping has more than 1,300 ships on its register, with a combined gross tonnage of 7.3 million tonnes.
Claiming the approval by China as a “significant advance” for the classification society, IRS managing director, Said Nassif, said, “Obviously China is a huge market and this is a major achievement for our team. The government is determined to ensure the highest quality standards are maintained, so we are elated to have gained this approval.”
