Yesterday the terminal operator, Contship Italia, described the effects of the strike as “extreme grave”.
One of the consequences is that the Mediterranean Shipping Company’s 14,000 teu containership ‘MSC Bettina’ that was transferring 1500 containers at the port is stranded at the terminal’s quay. MSC is currently diverting all its other ships scheduled to call at MCT to other ports in the Mediterranean, including Valencia and Piraeus.
More than 15 ships operated by other carriers were due to call at Italy’s largest container transhipment port within the next 36 hours, all of which will be diverted to competing ports in the region.
