The warning that it would shut down ports in Nigeria was issued by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), which claims that the new agency would be a duplication of the existing Federal Government agency, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
A petition in protest to the “unacceptable plans” has been signed by the MWUN President, Tony Nted, and Secretary-General, Aham Ubani and sent to Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, along with copies to the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Minister of Transport.
Local Nigerian news reports state that the MWUN has warned the country’s President of “plots by some highly placed individuals in the Presidency” to establish another Maritime Security and Safety Agency.
