Unlike the conventional rubber-tyred chassis upon which mobile harbour cranes are usually installed, the floating cranes are mounted on barges.
St. James Stevedoring Partners in Convent, Louisiana, has six mid-stream buoys served by Gottwald floating cranes ranging from mile marker (MM) 122 (located just outside New Orleans International Airport) up to MM 167 on the Lower Mississippi River.
The two Model 8 variant G HPK 8400 B floating cranes are the first Gottwald floating cranes that can handle loads up to 100 tonnes, and they will be added to the existing fleet of six floating cranes with the intention of increasing the transhipment efficiency of bulk goods including ores, coal, cereals and fertilisers from vessels up to Baby-Capesize, to barges.
