With more than 6,000 vessels moving via the Mississippi River each year and considered to be one of the world’s busiest waterways, New Orleans is the only US deep water port served by six “Class One” railroads, giving users direct and economical rail service to/from anywhere in the USA.
“Through investment and commitment, the port is readying itself for the increased cargo an expanded Panama Canal will bring to the Gulf Coast,” said Gary LaGrange, President and CEO of the Port of New Orleans.
In the past ten years, the Port of New Orleans has devoted more than US$400m to new facilities, including wharves, terminals, marshalling yards, cranes and transportation infrastructure. Most recently, its Board of Commissioners invested over US$108m towards ten completed or on-going construction projects in areas such as containerised cargo, break bulk cargo and cruising.
