The recovery that started in 2010 continued between January and June this year, with container traffic passing the one million teu mark due mainly to manufacturers expanding their international interests and strengthening their footholds in overseas markets. Imports also registered a 6% increase.
Barcelona’s principal markets are the Far East, North Africa and the Middle East, with a 13% increase in containers (195,048 teu) handled from China, its main trading partner; traffic volumes with Algeria and Turkey increased by 49% and 44% respectively, while other countries such as USA increased 28% the United Arab Emirates 49% and Mexico +18%.
Total traffic at the port rose to 22.5m tonnes, an 8% increase on the same period in 2010.
