The strong currents – running at 10 knots instead of the usual 0.5 knots – were caused by heavy rain in the interior of the state of Santa Catarina (SC), which led to at least three fatalities and more than 150,000 people evacuating their homes.
The SC Sate Government declared a ‘state of emergency’ and immediately provided Reais10m (US$5.84m) of assistance, while the Special Ports Minister, Leonardo Cristino, visited the ports on Tuesday offering his “full support”.
The APM Terminal (APMT) operated APMT Teconvi, which sustained major damage to its quay and patio areas through the devastating flooding of 2008 suffered again, although the recent dredging of the River Itajai-Acu to 14 m, along with other river defences and early warning systems, averted similar ‘catastrophic damage’.
