“The object is to encourage drivers to arrive at the gates of a terminal after registering for a specific time slot beforehand via the Internet,” explained Bertrand Dupuis, Overland Hinterland and Multimodal Manager at the Grand Port Maritime du Havre (GPMH).
“The result is a win-win operation; road hauliers lose no time at the terminal gates, the stevedore is no longer to blame and will be ultimately more productive, while the GPMH has a valuable selling point,” he said.
Today, most road haulage jobs at the terminal are organised using the new appointment system. “To date we have 190 haulage companies listed on the system and 65% of the cargo transiting by road is by appointment, which is highly encouraging”, said Louis Jonquière, CEO of Générale de Manutention Portuaire (GMP).
