Full container exports reached 44,232 teu, up 10.6%, with imports reaching 96,144teu, an 8% increase over August last year. However, empty exports stood at 44,220 teu, 13% down as stevedores prioritised full imports/exports following the weather events in July.
The leading containerised export commodities were cereals, chemicals, machinery and transport equipment; leading import commodities were machinery and transport equipment, including electrical and non-electrical machinery, motor vehicle parts and accessories as well as power generation machinery and equipment. Other commodities also included chemicals, paper products and miscellaneous manufactured goods.
The majority of imports were sourced from East Asia (46.8%) and Europe (15.8%), which combined accounted for over 60% of total container imports through Port Botany. Total trade for the financial year to date was approximately 5m tonnes, a decrease of 2.5% compared to the same period last year.
