The Chennai facility is the closest of its type to the port and is the first among South India’s inland container yards to adopt all-electric RTG operations following a sharp increase in throughput and subsequent space limitations in ports. The 41-tonnes capacity RTGs, which will be fitted with Variable Speed Generators to reduce fuel consumption, will stack containers one-over-five high, spanning seven container rows plus a truck lane.
This is the second order for Kalmar RTG cranes received from an Indian container freight station operator, following a recent order for seven machines for another customer; the manufacturer has supplied machines to CFSs and ports, including the Gateway Terminals India (APM Terminals Group) at the Port of Jawaharlal Nehru.
