More than 20 companies from countries in South America, Europe and Asia took part in the tender process.
The contract involves the construction, testing and staggered delivery of the 70-ton tractor-type tugs, the first of which will be delivered within two years of the contract being awarded.
Tugs will assist larger vessels transiting the new Canal unlike the existing system which uses locomotives; they will also assist in anchoring and other manoeuvres in the waterway.
