Swan Container Line has also included Hamburg in its weekly schedule for its St. Petersburg service. On the Hamburg – St. Petersburg – Rotterdam – Hamburg rotation, two 900 teu container vessels link Germany’s largest seaport with Russia.
In addition, Unifeeder has announced plans to include the new Russian Ust-Luga container terminal in its schedule starting in November. Unifeeder will be the first to add the new terminal to its liner services. Ust-Luga was set up as both a complement and an alternative to the Port of St. Petersburg where terminals often operate at maximum capacity. Furthermore, Ust-Luga will be less prone to becoming icebound in winter.
Russia is very significant for the Port of Hamburg and it ranks third in the Port’s list of top trading partners. In the first half of 2011, the volume of containers transhipped between Hamburg and Russia, at 276,000 teu was well above average and was equivalent to a year-on-year growth rate of 45%.
