Turkey’s Yilport container terminal in the Port of Yilpor, Izmit Bay, has set two new records by exceeding the 200,000th teu milestone in November and this month (December) handling 1,758 containers on the ‘MSC Tanzania’ at an average of 115.3 moves per hour (173,6 teu).

Yilport sets new records

Operations on the vessel started at 19:30hrs on the December 4 and finished at 10:45hrs the following day using four Mitsui quay cranes, working in conjunction with the port’s Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS).

Yilport CEO, Sean Pierce, highlighted that the record breaking operation was not simply the result of the Yildririm Group’s continued investment in the port sector and the purchase of quality systems and equipment.

“The enviable productivity has a lot to do with our investment in people and process, said Pierce.

“Our primary goal is to provide consistent, quality customer service and high productivity in all of our operations. Yilport is destined to do bigger and better things and currently we are focused on further increases to the velocity that containers move through the facility and will push for a completely paperless environment and tighter integration with our customers,” he said.

With a total throughput 186,000 teu in 2010, the port is currently running at 50% capacity although recently it has experienced continued double-digit growth and is actively seeking new customers.
