Two of the four new 123-tonne GE ‘PowerHaul 70071’ locomotives have already arrived, having been shipped for the first time by ACL. Manufactured in Pennsylvania, USA, the new generation GE locomotives use less fuel and reduce carbon emissions while increasing network utilisation, port capacity and reliability.
The locomotives are moved by rail to the Port of New York where they are loaded onto the ACL vessel operating on its weekly transatlantic service.
They are transported on Mafi trailers capable of carrying up to 150 tonnes. On arrival in the Port of Liverpool they are moved to the container terminal rail head, where they are lifted by a dual crane lift onto the rail track. They are later moved to Crewe to be prepared for service.
