The installation of new equipment and the construction of new terminals will increase the port’s capacity from 3.2m to 8m teu, said Jose Serra, president of the port authority Docas do Estado de Sao Paulo.
The new projects include the Reais2.3bn (US$1.2 b) Empresa Brasileira de Terminais Portuarios (Embraport) terminal adjacent to the Port of Santos being built by Odebrecht Transport, DP World and the Coimex Group. It is the first time that DP World and Odebrecht Investiments in Infrastructure have formed such a partnership.
The first phase of Embraport is expected to cost US$500m and open in 2012 with around 1m teu capacity and it will be operated by DP World. The fully developed project will have capacity of more than l.5m teu and about 2bn litres of ethanol.
