The MoU mean that industry partners from Antwerp and India will exchange information through the digital platform “India Natie” and, in the near future, work more closely together in the area of multi-modal transport.
As a result Indian carriers and shippers will be able to forward goods to and from the European hinterland easier through the Belgium port. In 2011, around five million tonnes of goods were shipped to and from India through the port, especially containers, steel and petroleum derivatives.
With a permanent representative in Mumbai, the Antwerp port community has been aware of the growth possibilities in the country for some time and had previously signed ‘friendship treaties’ with the ports of Mundra and the two ports of Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and Mumbai Port Trust.
