Petkim and APMT will create one of Turkey’s largest container and general cargo terminals for an initial investment of around US$350-400m with further investment depending on market demand. Initial capacity will be 1.5m teu which is 50% more than the capacity of the current Izmir Alsancak Port and further expansion can be phased based on market demand up to a maximum capacity of 3m teu.
The container terminal will comprise a 700 m quay (350 m for phase I in 2013 and a further 350 m for phase II by 2014) with 16 m water depth alongside and in the access channel. With a 53 ha yard for container handling, storage, a rail terminal and related services, the terminal will be equipped with post-Panamax STS cranes and capable of handing vessels of more than over 10,000 teu capacity.
APMT will have the right to operate the port for a period of 28 years with an option to extend it by four years, until 2046. In addition to the container terminal, APMT will also assume operations at the general cargo terminal where operations are expected to start by the end of 2012.
