Container handling proved to be in top form, with a year-on-year increase of 21%; Bremerhaven Container Terminal swept ahead of its rivals in the north range as containers throughput rose to 5,915,487 teu (2010: 4,888,655 teu). The best monthly performance to date was recorded in May when the port handled 561,000 teu.
“Whether you look at Rotterdam, Antwerp or Hamburg, no other major port in Europe achieved such strong growth in the maritime container logistics business. We have won new market share, which is proof of Bremerhaven’s continuing high competitiveness,” said Senator Martin Günthner, for Economic Affairs, Labour and Ports.
Bremerhaven also defended its title as the largest European automotive terminal, loading and discharging a total of 2,127,899 vehicles, an improvement of 30.4%.
