The rail system to and from the Port is one of the most important infrastructure links in Sweden with rail freight from the whole of the Nordic Region.
The Swedish Transport Administration has announced that it will be investing SEK 3.5bn (US$23.5m) in expanding the system, with construction scheduled to begin in 2014, four years earlier than anticipated.
Magnus Kårestedt, Port of Gothenburg’s CEO in welcoming the decision said: “This is very positive news for the Port of Gothenburg and for Swedish industry. Rail network expansion means that we can continue our investment in rapid, cost-effective, environmentally smart movement of freight by rail.”
