Coming from Colombia and Costa Rica, via the ports of Puerto Limon, Turbo and Santa Marta, the bananas will be unloaded, stored and distributed by CSC. On the outward voyage, calls will also be made at St.Maarten and Guadeloupe, which will include containerised cargo.
As a result, throughput at the Zeeland port will increase by around 100,000 tonnes, strengthening its position as a major centre for handling and storing fruit. This latest service follows closely the new services from Chile and South Africa that were recently attracted to Vlissingen.
According to Seatrade, the port was chosen due to its good location in terms of sailing time and its connections with the motorway network, as well as being home to specialised stevedoring companies ideally suited to handling this type of cargo.
