The terminal will become the first in the world to be equipped with Lift AGVs. These consist of two platforms that are able to load and unload containers independently; the initial order for Phase 1 of the terminal will be for 36 vehicles, to be delivered in Q1 2013, in combination with 128 storage racks.
Selection of the automated rail-mounted gantry (ARMG) cranes and ship-to-shore (STS) cranes is currently on-going.
Explaining its decision, APMT said that its terminal design concept is based on using STS cranes to place containers from the vessel directly onto a fleet of Lift AGVs. These will then “shuttle” between the quay and the container yard at a speed of 22 kph, using on-board navigation to follow a transponder grid.
