Maritime Industry asks for container weighing
The proposal has been submitted by Denmark, the Netherlands, the USA, BIMCO, the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), and the World Shipping Council (WSC).
The IMO’s Subcommittee on Dangerous Goods, Solid Cargoes and Containers will consider the proposal at its next meeting in September.
Many terminal operators believe that weighing containers should be dealt with before a box arrives at a terminal, not least as it means that once the actual weight is known the onus is on them to ‘deal’ with it, which can involve considerable cost and inconvenience,
