The cranes increase the number of Liebherr STS units operated by Transnet in South Africa to 27 and are the last of an order of 18. Six are at Pier 1 in Durban, six in Cape Town, one at Port Elizabeth and three more at Durban’s South and East Quays.
“The first Liebherr ship to shore crane commenced operation for Transnet in 2004 (and the latest) acquisition of Liebherr cranes for the Ngqura Container Terminal will help it to meet projected growth in port volumes,” said Gerry Bunyan Liebherr Container Cranes’ sales and marketing manager.
NCT has an alongside depth of 16.5 m and the new Liebherr cranes, which are capable of handling upwards of 200,000 teu/year, will assist the terminal in handling the largest Super post-Panamax vessels and increasing current annual capacity from the current 800,000 teu to 1.5m teu by 2013/2014 and an eventual forecasted capacity of 2m teu by 2019.
