Its arrival marks the half-way point in the boring process; the machine will now be turned around to drill a return tunnel to Watson Island. Each tunnel will carry two-lanes of traffic under Government Cut.
Once complete the tunnel will directly link the US Interstate highway system with port facilities, removing port traffic from downtown streets and providing quicker and easier access for container traffic and cruise passengers.
“It is a milestone for PortMiami,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Gimenez told a crowd of more than 500 onlookers. “We look forward to the day when pedestrians no longer have to compete with 18-wheelers for space on our downtown Miami streets,” he said.
