The expansion comprises deepening and widening the 33.5km long access channel, the port basins and turning basins. In total, approximately 67m cu m of sand, silt, clay and rock will be removed. The job will be undertaken using jumbo and medium sized trailing suction hopper dredgers, in combination with a jumbo cutter suction dredger and a large backhoe.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port is the largest container port in India with an annual handling capacity of 4.3m teu, representing about 50% of the total quantity of containers handled by Indian ports. By deepening the port from the current 11.5 m to over 14 m, it will be possible for larger container vessels to be accommodated, which, according to the port operator, will increase annual capacity to approximately 10m teu.
