The MSC Texas, at 1,095ft (334 m) long and 141ft wide can carry up to 8,238 teu when fully loaded, with a draft of 47.6ft. The ship arrived from Northern Europe on a weekly service into Port Everglades.
Previously, the largest container ship to call at the Port was also an MSC ship at 1,066ft (325 m) long and 140ft (43 m) wide that arrived in March 2011.
“We fully expect larger vessels, such as the MSC Texas, to frequently call Port Everglades in the future, especially once the Panama Canal is expanded,” said Steven Cernak, Port Everglades’, CEO and executive port director. “We are working with the US Army Corps of Engineers to deepen and widen the navigable channels at Port Everglades so that we are prepared to handle these ever larger ships going forward.”
