Color Line uses the inner-city Norwegenkai Terminal, which provides direct rail and road links. Inaugurated in 1997 by Norway’s Queen Sonja, the quayside was expanded this year to accommodate larger modern ships. More than €60m (US$76.5m) has been invested in the facility by the port, supported by the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.
“The Norwegenkai Terminal now has all the infrastructure required for further growth in both the passenger and cargo transport sectors,” said Dirk Claus, managing director of the Port of Kiel.
Ferry traffic between Kiel and Oslo began in 1961 and today serves the largest Baltic ferry ships currently in operation, ‘Color Fantasy’ and ‘Color Magic’. The ships are each more than 75,000 GT and carry up to 2,700 passengers, with more than 1,200 lane metres for ro-ro traffic. Last year they carried 1.1 m passengers and more than 100,000 trucks, trailers, buses and private cars.
