The port’s President and CEO, Dertje Meijer, described the move as “an important development”, saying, “In its new form, Port of Amsterdam will soon be better able to take on the international competition and act more dynamically”.
“It also offers every opportunity to further advance regional cooperation and to distribute the benefits and expenses of the port more evenly across the region. That offers opportunities to achieve our growth ambitions,” he added.
In its new legal form the port will be able to enter into international, national or regional partnerships on a larger scale, while, at the same time, taking on a more enterprising role as a strategic partner. The intensification of partnerships means that the port authority can share the associated responsibilities and interests with strategic partners. Transition to public enterprise status will take place following a referendum on the issue.
