The order, which also includes the fleet management software and a battery-changing station, is not only the first for AGVs and associated equipment ever placed outside Europe, but is the first for the manufacturer’s automated container-handling solutions in the USA.
The battery-changing station incorporates a pair of storage and retrieval machines operating on a single rail. These allow the 11-tonne battery cells of two AGVs to be swapped automatically and simultaneously. The software includes the fleet management for the new ship-to-shore and stack yard cranes, as well as navigation of the AGVs.
Delivery will begin from early 2014, with the remainder of the vehicles delivered in batches over the coming years. With a 70-tonne capacity, the AGVs will handle the horizontal movement of all standard ISO containers, including 45′ units between the quayside to the stack yard.
