The dredging is in addition to the current expansion work that will add 1m teu of new capacity to Container Terminal 2 later this year and another 4m teu capacity at Container Terminal 3 by 2014, once completed. By deepening the draught the port is able to handle up to 10 of the next generation 18,000 teu mega-vessels at the same time, the only port in the region able to do so.
In total, 477,000 cu m of material were removed from 2,900 m of quay wall alongside container berths 14, 16 and 17, the roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) terminal and the tanker terminal. The alongside depths are now -11.5 m at the ro-ro and tanker berths, and -16 m at the three container berths. Sediments from the dredge have been re-used in the on-going reclamation of Jebel Ali Island to the north of Container Terminal 2.
Jebel Ali’s container terminals are equipped with 22 berths and 78 cranes to cater to the world’s largest vessels. With its new draught it can now accommodate ships of any size.
