The expansion would add a further 3m teu capacity at the port, which currently has an annual throughput capacity of 5m teu.
Located on the Gulf of Oman in the Arabian Sea and primarily handling transhipments, the port is enhancing cargo links through air, road and rail networks; over US$3.5bn has been invested by industries in the adjacent Free Zone, which is expected to become a hub for the region’s general cargo trade and cruise traffic.
General cargo traffic has grown by over 660% since 1998, with volume reaching 7.2m tonnes last year. With the port’s general cargo terminal tripling capacity for dry and liquid bulk shipments, the port is planning for even greater influence in Oman’s future in the global logistic chain.
